“Stepping onto the Pathway”

By Sharon Horner

1/10/2014

Stepping on to the pathway widened by the exemplary example established by Honorable Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has inspired and aided in shaping my definition of social justice in my lifetime. Social justice symbolizes elemental values ingrained in equity, respect, and freedom for all to pursue opportunities in society that amplifies a spirit of inclusion, positive encouragement, advancement, and support for others and their diverse perspectives. In order to, enhance, sustain and strengthen the foundation of social justice enriched by the indelible contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and each individual crusader of equality, advocate for peace and trumpeter for integrity, that strive to make a difference past and present; I decided to join the ranks. By promoting, the enduring message of social justice, nonviolence and unity through my positive actions to educate others and volunteerism in my community and school, which collectively encourages others to become the beacon of hope needed in times of strife and tribulation that the proceeding generations can build upon to ignite courage for a better existence for all.

In the immortal words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., “Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness.” In view of that, I have chosen to walk proudly in the light of humanity and embrace the platform of leadership, which affords me the privilege to not only uphold, but also practice the values of Dr. King to diminish disparities. In such areas as, education, housing and poverty, while demonstrating a strong commitment to advocate for positive social change and building cross-cultural relationships as a member of Student Government on my campus at Davenport University and as a community member that volunteers to help others locate affordable housing in unstable economic times. Furthermore, by incorporating the values imparted by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. into my future endeavors reinforces my abilities to vigorously reach and inspire others to advocate for social justice, which necessitates that everyone has a right to basic human dignity and to have their basic economic needs fulfilled no matter their background or environment.

Reflecting upon, the strong and discernible impact that Dr. King’s profound actions and leadership has made in my life reminds me every moment that I matter and my words have power, which can influence positive lasting actions in this world that have the potential to create ripples throughout the future and spark change in the next generation searching for direction. As a result, I have stepped out of my comfort zone to achieve my dreams and aspirations and in doing so, I was developing as a leader in the eyes of my family, peers, and community, which gives me confidence to nurture others in their pursuits of advancement and happiness. As well as, cultivating the hidden leader and drum major within them, while finding their voice in the storm of adversity. Given that, I am living proof that the dream still exists and is thriving.
