Scholarship gift allows her to give back

Sara Hop '09

A 2006 President’s Scholarship recipient, DU alumna Sara Hop wanted to make the most of her college experience by being active on campus and giving back to others.  Formerly called the Lettinga Campus Charter Scholarship, the full-tuition scholarship is awarded to incoming freshmen with a 3.9 or higher high-school GPA. “Having a full-ride scholarship allowed me to focus exclusively on school and school-related activities,” explained Sara.

During her time at DU, Sara became very involved in Student Life and participated in the study abroad program, traveling to Germany and France in July 2008.  She played on the women’s soccer team, worked closely with the Panther Recreation intramural program, and was employed at the Student Center from the time it opened in October 2008. Her degree in International Business and Sports Management nearly complete, Sara spent the past year as an intern in the communications and development office at the Van Andel Institute in Grand Rapids.

But it was her experience during an Alternative Spring Break trip that really changed how Sara Hop looks at life.  During a February 2007 relief trip to Gulfport, Mississippi, Sara met then-5-year-old Ny’gel.  He had been living in his grandmother’s house with his mother and four siblings since Hurricane Katrina destroyed his own home two years earlier.  DU students were doing repairs on a house in his grandmother’s neighborhood when Ny’gel approached them. “He just walked up and said ‘hi’ and handed me a rose,” Sara said.  The little boy quickly became Sara’s favorite and she grew close to his entire family in the short time she was there. The experience—made possible by her scholarship—helped change Sara’s perspective. “I saw that I could make a difference in the lives of these kids, just as others had made a difference for me,” she said.

Since then, Sara has returned six times to visit Ny’gel and his family, including a trip on her own this past July to work with Solid Rock Ministries, a nonprofit founded to coordinate Katrina relief efforts. “We celebrated the Fourth with Ny’gel and his family and watched fireworks over the Gulf,” said Sara.  She and trip coordinator Kris Jones also met with local officials about  building a community center and garden for area children.
“Our goal is to give the kids more opportunities to develop and grow, to give them a chance to excel, just like my scholarship has done for me,” she said. “Every day I thank the donors who made it possible for me to explore and experience opportunities like this. I’m so proud to say I’m a Davenport University alum!”
