DU student and alumni volunteers offer free tax assistance

Student and alumni volunteers from Davenport University are off to a great start with this year’s free income tax preparation sessions. More than 40 DU students and alumni are part of this program and have prepared more than 700 returns so far—putting more than $1.3 million back in tax payers’ pockets.

Free assistance will be available to low- and middle-income tax-filers (less than $49,000 in total family income) in the academic building at Davenport University’s W.A. Lettinga Campus.

The volunteers are providing their assistance in conjunction with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, a cooperative effort of the Internal Revenue Service and many organizations to train volunteers to prepare basic tax returns in communities across the country. As volunteers, students have been certified by the IRS. “This volunteer effort gives students a chance to have some real-world work experience with actual clients while also benefitting those who need assistance completing their tax returns,” said Deb Kiss, department coordinator for accounting and finance at Davenport University.

Last year, students participating in VITA served a record number of people, with refunds totaling more than $4 million. Thirty DU students and alumni completed IRS training courses to become certified VITA tax preparers. They donated over 3,000 hours of service to staff four tax sites in Grand Rapids and Holland.

Tax assistance is offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Those wishing to take advantage of the free program should call (616) 871-6147 or click here to schedule an appointment.
