Why I supported the 1 Million Penny Challenge

Yolanda Williams-Davis, 1990 graduate of Detroit College of Business and 2003 graduate of Davenport, recently contributed to the 1 Million Penny challenge and had this to say about her support:

“I chose to give back because others have and that has made a lasting impression on me. My DU professors gave back. My high school counselor and teachers gave back. My parents gave back. My neighbors (villagers) gave back. I am a product of those who generously gave back so that I (and others) can greatly contribute to our community. My giving back truly does make a difference and provides a DU student the opportunity to give back down the road and join the ranks of those that generously give to our communities.”

Now is your chance to contribute and make a difference for the students who will someday follow in your footsteps. Whatever you are able to give, we hope you know that every penny can help make big things possible!

Smiling grads at the 2010 Commencement

On May 2, DU was proud to honor the class of 2010 during a University-wide commencement ceremony at the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids. More than 1,200 graduates walked across the stage with nearly 8,000 people in attendance.

David Brandon, athletic director at the University of Michigan, gave the commencement address. Brandon spoke of life experiences and what one ordinary person can accomplish when he or she is willing to take advantage of the doors that open throughout life. Brandon’s upbeat leadership style, innovation and accomplishments were acknowledged with an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Davenport University.

New programs for Fall 2010

Sustainable Business Development

Management is the most versatile degree in business. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, general management jobs consistently have the most job openings. At Davenport University, the management curriculum is focused on industry needs which have led to the development of a new specialty – Sustainable Business Development.

Sustainable Business Development involves the creation of social and shareholder value while simultaneously decreasing negative impacts on the environment. This specialty prepares students for management careers based on sustainable business practices and focuses on the financial, environmental and social capital of an organization. The program includes an international perspective on topics such as operating standards, leadership and social responsibility. This specialty is offered at the Grand Rapids Campus and online.

Technology Management

Did you know that employment for computer and information systems managers is expected to grow 17 percent between 2008 and 2018 – faster than the average for all occupations?* In addition, job growth is expected to be the fastest in computer systems design establishments; software publishing firms; data processing and hosting companies; management, scientific and technical consulting services; and healthcare organizations.

To meet this growing demand, Davenport University has developed a new Bachelor’s of Science in Technology Management degree. This program offers a major in Global IT Project Management with three options for specialties including Computer Information Systems, Information Security and Networking. A degree in Technology Management from Davenport prepares students for a variety of management positions related to information technology. The program integrates in-depth project management concepts with foundational instruction in mathematics, science, business and technology. Many classes are available in a traditional classroom setting or online.
