Congratulations to the Class of 2011!

Welcome graduates!

Yesterday, Davenport University celebrated the commencement of 2,400 graduates. Approximately 1,200 attended the 2 p.m. ceremony at the Van Andel Arena, the fourth commencement to honor graduates from all campuses.

Help us welcome these new Davenport graduates to the University’s 56,000 member alumni family by being the first to say congratulations on our Alumni Association Facebook page.

Thank you for choosing Davenport University or one of its predecessor colleges for your higher education journey. We are proud of all of you!

Campus Spotlight: Livonia

Rita Barrios '92

Rita Barrios '92

After 18 years working in industry in the field of computer information systems (CIS), Rita reached a point in her career where it was time to give back – so that is what she did. Despite her passion for working in CIS, three years ago Rita moved to academia and is now the Assistant Professor of Computer and Information Systems at the Center for Cyber Security and Intelligence Studies at the University of Detroit Mercy.

Her passion for the industry carries over into the classroom where she educates her students with almost two decades of hands-on experience, an advanced degree in Computer Information Systems and a personal mission to “finish each day and be done with it.” She goes on to say “I tell my students to do what they can today and look forward to what the future brings. If you get one bad grade on an exam figure out what went wrong and move on to the next project/task.”

This personal mission statement and close friend and classmate, Jennifer Salloum, helped her succeed at Detroit College of Business. Rita still remembers the days of studying in the Student Union and all of the fun times she had with Jennifer, Senior Admissions representative for Davenport University at the Livonia Campus.

Rita chose DCB because of the small private college experience and the fact that faculty were industry experts, like she has become.  ”The content that comes from someone who has worked in the field they are teaching is invaluable and prepared me to get where I am today”, said Rita.

Dianne Champion Class of 2014

Name: Dianne Champion

Class Year: 2014

How did you choose Davenport?

I had been accepted to several four-year institutions, however, I felt forgotten after acceptance.  I researched four-year universities in my area that offered a BBA in Human Resource Management and decided to make an appointment with DU Admissions. I met with Jennifer Salloum at the Livonia campus and had an instant connection and felt welcomed and appreciated for my academic achievements thus far. read more…
