We are currently seeking nominations for the 2011 Alumni Awards which includes our newest award – the Outstanding Young Alumni Award.  Each year, alumni awards are given to individuals in recognition of their professional accomplishments, service to others and contributions to the community.

Nominations for the following awards will be accepted until July 31, 2011.

  • The Distinguished Alumni Award is the highest bestowed alumni award presented in recognition of a Davenport University graduate who has made notable lifetime achievements in a professional field; has provided exemplary service to Davenport University through time, talent and financial support; is highly engaged in community service and visibly promotes the value of higher education.
  • The Hy Berkowitz Professional Excellence Award is presented to a graduate who exemplifies University values and who has made outstanding contributions in his or her career field.
  • The Outstanding Young Alumni Award is presented in recognition of a young alumnus/a who has accomplished early achievements in his/her chosen field.

If you know someone who is deserving of these honors or if you’d like to nominate yourself please complete the online nomination form.

The awards ceremony will be held in the fall of 2011.  Please look for more information on this event in future issues of our alumni eNewsletter – The Connection.

Approximately 700 guests attended the 2011 Excellence in Business (EIB) Dinner Gala on Friday, May 6. The Peter C. Cook Excellence in Business Award was presented to President and Chief Executive Officer of Steelcase, Inc., Jim Hackett. The black-tie fundraiser for student scholarships also featured keynote speaker, award winning actress Helen Hunt.

The annual EIB Dinner Gala raises funds for student scholarships. The Excellence in Business Dinner was established in 1998 in honor of alumnus Peter C. Cook. The award recognizes business and community leaders who exemplify the entrepreneurial spirit, success and generosity to community that are hallmarks of the Davenport University mission, vision and values.

More than $1.7 million has been raised to benefit Davenport University Foundation scholarships through the annual award galas over the past 13 years. Previous award recipients include Peter C. Cook, Frederik Meijer, Richard M. DeVos, Wilbur A. Lettinga, David G. Frey, John Spoelhof, Robert L. Hooker, Betsy DeVos, Donald W. Maine, John C. Canepa, Fred P. Keller, Ambassador Peter F. Secchia, Doug DeVos and Steve Van Andel.

How did you choose Davenport? Convenience of location

Who is your favorite Professor, and why? Lazare Teague because his teaching method is very hands-on and he has great personality.

What is your dream job? To own my own fine dining restaurant

What three character traits would your friends use to describe you? Loyal, Friendly, Kind

What are your plans after graduation? I am undecided at this point

How did you hear about Davenport? A student, Ryan Day, referred me.

Hobbies: I enjoy reading, watching movies and spending time with Family and friends.

Favorite Food: Pizza from Sam’s in Alma

If you won the lottery what would you do? I would first give a tithe off the top to my church and then I would use the rest to help others in need and also do some world traveling.

What advice would you give someone graduating from Davenport today?

Set goals for yourself and never give up on the goal or yourself.   Make it happen.

If you could re-live your college years, what would you do differently?

I wasn’t ready for college after I graduated from high school, for some reason school was difficult for me back then.  Quite the contrary I found taking classes at Davenport very easy.   Classes that fit my interest and instructors who encouraged an open exchange of ideas made learning fun.    I learned to become a life-long learner at Davenport and to this day I am studying and learning. keep reading…
