Davenport University Alumni Association Board of Directors

The Davenport Alumni Association Board of Directors held its quarterly meeting on Thursday, July 21 at the new Grand Rapids Downtown Center at 45 Ottawa. The board learned about the MBA programs offered through the new center from Marisa Buscaglia, Program Manager. How did you choose Davenport?
I decided on attending Davenport because one of my co-workers attended and graduated from Davenport and she highly recommended that I check it out. Once I talked to Alyssa Irani at the University Center in Traverse, I was convinced.

What is your favorite Davenport memory?
I struggle with picking just one.

Who is your favorite Professor, and why
My favorite professor thus far has been Amanda Neuman (Comm. 120 – Presentation Techniques.)  Professor Neuman provided support and encouragement to all of her students. She was just as active as we were within the assigned discussion board assignments. She was always very Read more…

What advice would you give someone graduating from Davenport today?
My best advice would be to take advantage of Davenport’s career services. They offer a lot of information that can help new graduates starting new careers, as well as those looking to advance in their current positions.

What book do you recommend others should read and why?
I recommend “The Total Money Makeover” by Dave Ramsey. His book offers simple, common sense financial philosophies and advice that can have a large impact on an individual’s financial future. This information gives great advice to those who graduate college with student debt and can be especially helpful to graduates who are just starting their careers. Read more…

Alumni Summer Celebration

Donna Chivis finds time to chat with DU Alumni Association Board Member, Ann Swanson '96

The new Downtown MBA center at the corner of Ottawa Avenue and Louis Street was the perfect venue for the Alumni Summer Celebration. DU alums from all across West Michigan stopped in and enjoyed a great selection of food, beer and wine from alumnus John Russo’s Wine Warehouse and Deli, and the music of Troll for Trout.   Congratulations to Bill Benson who won the custom Davenport bean bag toss game set.

The sun was shining, faces were smiling, and the food was delicious in the Great Lakes Loons Northern Pavilion in Midland. Davenport University and predecessor college alumni, students and staff had a great day at the ballpark on July 10 when Midland and Saginaw alums gathered for fun in the sun! DU sunscreen was distributed and enthusiastic “catchers” took home stuffed panthers! The Great Lakes Loons defeated the Fort Wayne TinCaps by a score of 10 – 7. Click here for event photos.

How did you choose Davenport?

I went in to several different colleges to visit and I felt that Davenport wanted to make sure my educational experience was outstanding. There was a scholarship that I qualified for and cost was a big factor that I was taking into consideration.  I was treated as a person and not just as a student number. The classes were smaller for better instruction and I prefer one-on-one interaction rather than hundreds of other students in a lecture hall.

Did you receive a scholarship? Yes, the Silver Scholarship which I am so thankful for.

What is your favorite Davenport memory?

There are countless positive memories that I can think of but my favorite memory would have to be when I was at graduation. It was one of the best moments of my life and I am so glad that I got to share it with my family and friends.

Who is your favorite Professor, and why?

Jim Turner was by far my favorite Professor. He has taught me what type of manager I want to be. He is one of the kindest people I have ever met. He puts everyone above himself and would do anything for anyone. I cannot say enough positive things about him.

What is your dream job?

My dream job is working for a large corporation in their training department. I am currently the Human Resource Coordinator for the Lansing West Menards location and would love to eventually transfer to their General Office focusing on the training of employees. From taking classes at Davenport I realized I have a true passion for educating others on the technicalities of their positions.

What three character traits would your friends use to describe you? Outgoing, funny, honest
