Black Heritage Luncheon a success

Grand Rapids African American Youth Chorus

More than 100 students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members enjoyed the first annual Black Heritage Luncheon: A Celebration of Presence, Participation, and Progress on Saturday, February 25 at the Sneden Center. With this afternoon of food, music, testimonials and fellowship, Black History Month was commemorated by recognizing black heritage at Davenport through a celebration of our black students, staff, faculty and alumni.

Dr. Rhae-Ann Booker, Executive Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, started the celebration by stating, “This morning, you will be reminded that, yes, people of Black heritage have been present at DU, but not just sitting on the sidelines. We have participated in the life of DU and contributed to its success as DU offers greater educational opportunities to people of all backgrounds.”

Featured speakers included current MBA student and alumnus DeShaun Mateen ’11; Wilma Mitchell, ’86, Director of Admissions; Antonio McCutchen ’99, Associate Chair of Technology; and Kalyn Risker ’06; Founder and Executive Director of SAFE (Sisters Acquiring Financial Empowerment). Each presentation reflected the unique experiences of the individuals and their current circumstances and emphasized the common message of DU as a supportive community. The celebration also included musical selections by the Grand Rapids African American Youth Chorus and the Grand Rapids Women’s Chorus evoking a sense of community as attendees reflected on a shared past and future.
