Call for Alumni Award nominations

Doug Lameyer; Donald W. Maine, Chancellor Emeritus; Randy Goodyke, 2011 Hy Berkowitz Professional Excellence Award recipient

We are currently accepting nominations for the 2012 Alumni Awards which includes three new awards -  Donald W. Maine College of Business, College of Technology and College of Health Professions Alumni Awards.

Each year the Alumni Association honors deserving Davenport alumni for their professional accomplishments, contributions in the community and support of Davenport University’s mission. If you know someone who is deserving of these honors please complete the online nomination form.

Distinguished Alumni Award
This award was established in 1974 to recognize exceptional graduates who represent the University’s mission, vision and values. The recipient will have made notable achievements in his or her field and will be a distinguished person in public life, business or service to others.

Hy Berkowitz Professional Excellence Award
This award recognizes a graduate of Davenport University for exceptional professional and personal accomplishments in their chosen field and in their community. The recipient will have overcome challenges to complete their degree and become established in their field.

Outstanding Young Alumni Award
This award is presented in recognition of a graduate who has accomplished early achievements in his or her chosen field, has demonstrated innovative and responsible professional leadership and has successfully engaged in community service.

Donald W. Maine College of Business, College of Technology and College of Health Professions Alumni Awards
These awards will honor a graduate of each college who has shown outstanding professional accomplishments in a related field and who has demonstrated leadership in and dedication to their profession.

The awards ceremony will be held in the fall of 2012.  Please look for more information on this event in future issues of our alumni eNewsletter – The Connection.

2012 Excellence in Business Dinner and Gala

Scholarship fundraising gala event to feature Tom Izzo as guest speaker

Davenport University will present the 2012 Peter C. Cook Excellence in Business (EIB) Award to well-known community leaders and philanthropists David and Carol Van Andel. The annual fundraising gala will be held at DeVos Place on Friday, May 11, 2012, with a reception at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 7 p.m. The keynote speaker will be Tom Izzo, head coach of men’s basketball at Michigan State University.

This annual gala is vital to our students who rely on scholarship support each year. The support of generous sponsors and attendees help students achieve success in the classroom that leads to success in their careers.

David Van Andel is Chairman and CEO of the Grand Rapids-based Van Andel Institute and Chairman of IdeaSphere Inc. Previously he served as Chief Operating Officer of Amway’s Pyxis Innovations business unit and he remains a member of Amway Corporation’s Board of Directors. He is a co-owner of the Grand Rapids Griffins Hockey team and is active in numerous business and community organizations including The Right Place and the Grand Rapids Economic Club and Hope College Board of Trustees.

Carol Van Andel is an active volunteer and philanthropist committed to children’s issues, healthy lifestyles and community development. In addition to her role as Executive Director of the David and Carol Van Andel Foundation, she has served and continues to serve on many boards such as Bethany Christian Services, GR Public Museum Foundation Board, Van Andel Education Institute Advisory Board and YMCA National Board. Davenport Athletics team up to strikeout cancer and put an end to domestic violence

Baseball
The Davenport Sports Marketing team invites you out to the ballpark on Saturday, April 14 as the Panther Baseball team takes on Madonna University in their annual Strikeout Cancer game.  All proceeds from the day will go to the Van Andel Institute.  DU is also asking that you bring a ball cap to donate to “Caps for Clayton“.

Softball
On Friday, April 20th Davenport’s Softball team is playing to put an end to domestic violence during a game against University of Michigan – Dearborn.  This family-friendly event will also include raffles, games, prizes and a special t-shirt sale. All proceeds will benefit the Cristi Curtis Memorial Scholarship.

Midland Student Nursing Association

Education occurs through classroom experience and extends beyond through the experiences our students have in their field of study. The Student Nursing Association of Midland (SNA) makes a powerful statement with its outreach and community service as it promotes the field of health and offers opportunities for professional growth for its members.

Actively engaged in their programs of study, the SNA recently launched a Health and Safety Fair where student nurses presented a variety of health topics to the community focusing on promoting health, disease prevention, health screenings and living a healthy life style. The event was open to the community with the participation of local health service businesses.

Davenport University to Introduce Insurance Education Specialty, Developed With University of Farmers

Farmers Donates $10,000 Toward Insurance Education Scholarships

Responding to the growing need for new talent in the insurance and risk management industry, Davenport University is proud to introduce a new Risk Management and Insurance specialty within its Bachelor of Business Administration in Management program beginning in the fall of 2012. Farmers Insurance, which worked with Davenport to develop the curriculum, has also made a generous commitment to provide $10,000 for the next three years toward student scholarships in Davenport’s Insurance Education Specialty.
