Totally Happenin’ Homecoming!

A DeLorean made a special appearance during Homecoming. It was not programmed to return to 1955...yet.

Totally Happenin’ Homecoming was indeed “totally happenin’!” The University campuses all celebrated the 1980′s in their own way. There were banner competitions with resurrected ’80′s Davenport College slogans like “Dream it, Do it!” Pounce the Panther became DU’s version of Mr. T, we mean Mr. P, so named by the “A” Team (Advising). Arcade games from the 1980′s were available to students, and on Friday evening of Homecoming Week, over 500 students, alumni, faculty, staff and friends of Davenport enjoyed a rousing game of Rugby on the turf field between the Panthers and the MSU Spartans. The game was preceded by a delicious tailgate dinner of barbecued chicken and ribs and followed by a “nifty” concert by the Square Pegz, a Michigan ’80′s band. There was even a very special appearance by a vintage 1980′s DeLorean! Click here for photos!

Young Alumni Council makes an impact

Members of the Young Alumni Council assist with Freshmen Move-In!

The Davenport University Young Alumni Council has been growing and attending more events in support and recognition of the institution.  This fall, the Council assisted new Freshmen with moving their belongings into the dorms on-campus, and many members attended events associated with Homecoming, including the Alumni Awards Celebration and the DU vs. MSU rugby match.  We are encouraged by the interest and enthusiasm of the Council and plan for membership in this important DU organization to grow!  Please email David Tyler at David.Tyler@davenport.edu for additional information.

Davenport awarded $1.2 million to launch veteran’s BSN degree

Davenport University has been selected to receive $1.2 million in funding from the United States Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration to launch a Veteran’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing (VBSN) degree.  DU is the only institution in Michigan and only one of nine in the country to receive this grant, to be distributed over a four-year period. The grant will cover 100-percent of program costs.

Many returning military service members and veterans have medical training coupled with combat military experience, which would translate well into a nursing career if given the opportunity to enhance and grow their knowledge-base and skillsets. The VBSN is designed to help these individuals successfully pursue and obtain a nursing degree and a position in the healthcare field. For many veterans and military medically-trained persons, this program could fast-track them into the middle of their sophomore year.

We expect to begin the first 15-student cohort in the Fall 2014 semester at our W.A. Lettinga, Warren and Midland Campuses and potentially our Lansing Campus.  This grant solidifies DU’s status as a leader in providing veterans and military members with innovative, proactive resources and services tailored to meet their needs and utilize their unique skillsets and experiences.  Interested veterans and military members can begin the admission process immediately by contacting Adam Betz or Jonathan Highman.

We need your help!

Davenport University and its predecessor college grads change emails, jobs and locations so often that it is hard to keep up with them. The Alumni Association is working with Harris Connect to produce Davenport University Alumni Today—a print directory scheduled for publication in 2014.

The easiest and fastest way to track down an old school friend is through the Alumni Today publication as it will include up-to-date contact information. You will be able to reconnect with classmates, and the publication will feature an introduction with full color pictures and a history of the University. The publication will also include a section for photos and memories from your days at Davenport.

Over the next several months, you will receive postcards, emails or phone calls from Harris asking for updated contact information. We would appreciate your cooperation in updating your contact information. All updates are returned to the University so that our database remains current.

Harris Connect is only collecting information for purposes of the directory. Your information will not be released to any third parties. You decide whether or not your personal information is published in the directory–make your wishes clear to the representative with whom you speak. It is a great way to stay connected to the Daveport Family!

Alumni have the OPTION of adding information to two sections of the directory:

1) Through the Years - This section allows alumni to upload a photo to include in the publication.

2) Class Year/Biographical Section - This section allows alumni to upload a “What’s Been Happening” personal essay of up to 300 words or 1600 characters

Thank you in advance for your participation.

Traverse City “Wine Down” alumni event a great success!

On Tuesday, September 17, the Davenport University Alumni Association met with graduates, friends and staff of the Traverse City campus at Chateau Chantal, a winery located north of Traverse City on the Old Mission Peninsula.  The aesthetically stunning year-round winery and Bed & Breakfast provided guests from Davenport the opportunity to embark upon a tour of the facility and enjoy a pre- and post-event reception on the outdoor patio.

The reception featured delicious appetizers, drinks and immaculate views of the peninsula, which can be seen from the hill on which the winery rests.  Networking and mingling commenced throughout the evening, and the Alumni Association was very pleased to have the opportunity to re-engage its Traverse City alumni on a beautiful evening.  If you live near the Traverse City area, or are interested in joining us for future events up north, stay connected at www.DUalum.com/events.  Please click here to see photos from the event!
