Alumni, are you ready for some football? It’s official: Football to become a sport at DU!

At its most recent meeting, the Davenport University Board of Trustees passed a resolution of support to move forward with steps to develop a football program for the University. Davenport is now in the very early stages of planning and development for this program, with a timeline to be created for important milestones such as the hiring of a head coach, establishment of league relations, student athlete recruitment and finalization of facilities plans. When the timeline has been finalized, Davenport will make further announcements.

“A football program will help us to create an outstanding experience for our students and will support the continued growth of Davenport at its W.A. Lettinga Campus,” said Dr. Richard J. Pappas, President of Davenport University. “We obtained feedback from members of our faculty as well as other internal audiences and we are gratified to have their support as we move forward. We look forward to creating a high-quality program in which all of our stakeholders can take great pride.”

The process to add a football program to the University’s strong athletics department began in the winter of 2012 when the University hired a consultant to conduct a feasibility study. Following the study, Davenport formed a committee to explore every facet of a potential program and the impact it would have on the University.

“The addition of football is a natural progression in the growth of Davenport’s successful athletic program and it will be an exciting enhancement to our campus life,” said Paul Lowden, Director of Athletics. “It also will further enhance our academic quality, as student athletes at Davenport enjoy a high average GPA level. We are energized to engage in the hard work still to be done to bring football to DU.”

The University will make additional announcements when the timeline has been finalized.  Please see a news briefing on football at DU by clicking here.

Lansing campus hosts DU vs. MSU Friday night hockey celebration day with tailgate and suite

On Friday, December 6, the DU Lansing campus (Student Life and the Alumni Association) hosted a pre-game tailgate on campus, then hosted a party in a suite at Suburban Ice in East Lansing complete with pizza, pop and desserts in support of the Davenport Panthers as they took on MSU.  While the Panthers lost a very close game as MSU scored with less than 5 minutes left to play, the event was a huge success drawing local alumni, staff, students and player families, and included giveaways such as red and white pom poms and Pounce paw cookie cutters for all who attended.

DU hockey travels throughout the state, so visit the hockey website at frequently to see if they will be playing their next game near you!  If so, support the team and wear your red!  See photos of the event here.

Davenport awarded $1.2 million to launch Veteran’s BSN program

Davenport University has been selected to receive $1.2 million in funding from the United States Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration to launch a Veteran’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing (VBSN) degree. DU is the only institution in Michigan and only one of nine in the country to receive this grant, to be distributed over a four-year period.

Many returning military service members and veterans have medical training coupled with combat military experience, which would translate well into a nursing career if given the opportunity to enhance and grow their knowledge-base and skillsets. The VBSN is designed to help these individuals successfully pursue and obtain a nursing degree and a position in the healthcare field. For many veterans and military medically-trained persons, this program could fast-track them into the middle of their sophomore year. keep reading…
