Email Security Awareness

Email is often used as a method of cyber attack. These attacks can be “phishing” messages, designed to steal information or infect your computer, or “spear phishing” messages, using highly personalized information to trick you into trusting them to steal information or infect your computer.

Here are some quick guidelines to help you avoid falling for phishing or spear phishing attacks:

  1. Only open attachments you are expecting
  2. If the email is from a well-known business, do not follow the links in the email. Instead, open the companies website and log in there to access your account and address the problem outlined in the email.
  3. If you are suspicious, call the individual or company who the message claims to be from – a quick phone call can clarify if the message is legitimate.
