Reconstructing a warrior’s experience: Local artist to present at DU during Veterans Week


When Grand Rapids artist Matthew Provoast was cleaning out his grandfather’s home after he passed away, he came across boxes deep in the basement cupboards labeled “Viet Nam.” His grandfather, Thomas Zimmer, was a Metro Detroit native who served in Vietnam from 1969 to 1972.

From Monday, Nov. 6 through Saturday, Nov. 11, DU will celebrate Veterans Week with the following events:

Engage@DU features campus events, student organizations and volunteer opportunities

OrgSync has migrated to a new platform called Engage@DU.

The Engage@DU platform will provide the tools and resources that OrgSync offered, in addition to a new layout with additional functionality. Engage@DU will provide a campus events calendar, student organization information and volunteer opportunities (including the VTO form for employees).

DU alumna recognized as one of Metro Detroit’s emerging leaders

Randi OlsonDavenport University alumna Randi Olson has been recognized with a Vanguard Award by Detroit Young Professionals. She is one of 11 emerging leaders in Metro Detroit who will be recognized at the 7th annual Vanguard Awards event on Wednesday, Oct. 25.

“I feel honored and privileged to be recognized among such inspiring young leaders,” Olson, a forensic accounting manager at Rehmann Corporate Investigative Services, said. “I’m simply a person who is progressing well through my career and participating in two volunteer organizations that bring me great joy. It is truly an honor and a privilege to be recognized this year.”

Olson earned her bachelor’s degree in Accounting Fraud Investigation at Davenport University, taking classes at the campuses in Livonia and Warren to complete her degree.

Join Davenport for its Homecoming weekend festivities

Football team runs onto the fieldDavenport University’s Homecoming festivities kick off at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, with the Alumni Awards Ceremony. The Alumni Association will honor six outstanding alumni for their professional and personal achievements.

Before the Homecoming Game on Saturday, Oct. 14, DU faculty and staff can join alumni at the Alumni Homecoming Tailgate. The event features lunch, giveaways and tailgate games. Tailgate opens at 11 a.m.

At 1 p.m. Saturday, the DU Panthers will face off against the McKendree University Bearcats.

Rachel Esterline Perkins has joined Davenport University as Director of Communications, responsible for media relations, internal communications and social media.

Veterans to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (VBSN) Grant Extended

Grant funding for Davenport University’s Veterans to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (VBSN) degree program has been extended for a fifth year to enable the work of the team to continue to progress.

As part of National Hispanic Heritage Month, Davenport University will host Andrés Chávez — the grandson of late Civil Rights leader César E. Chávez — at the 7th Annual Acts of Courage address at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, in the Lettinga Auditorium in the Sneden Center.

Davenport advocates for Michigan Tuition Grant at the Capitol

Davenport University joined private colleges and universities from across the state Wednesday to encourage legislators to continue to support of the Michigan Tuition Grant as part of the Michigan Independent Colleges & Universities (MICU) Advocacy Day in Lansing.
